Is TikTok Cheating Artists Out of Millions of Dollars? The Industry Giant Universal Music Group Thinks So! What's Going On?? Here's The Facts...

The music industry is abuzz with accusations. Universal Music Group (UMG), one of the "Big Three" of the largest record labels in the country (and the entire world, for that matter), has publicly accused TikTok of underpaying artists when in comparison to other traditional streaming services. 

Here's a breakdown of the current landscape:

Payouts:

  • TikTok: According to The Verge, TikTok pays out roughly $0.01 per stream. This means an artist would need 1 million streams to earn just $10. (WHAT THE HELL KINDA SHIT IS THAT?)
  • Spotify: Spotify pays out between $0.003 and $0.005 per stream, which translates to needing between 200,000 to 333,333 streams to make $10.
  • Tidal: Tidal offers a slightly higher payout per stream, ranging between $0.012 and $0.013. Here, an artist would only need around 769 streams to make $10.

Transparency:

  • Lack of Clarity on TikTok: Musicians have criticized the lack of transparency surrounding TikTok's payouts. The exact formula for calculating payments remains unclear.
  • More Openness on Spotify & Tidal: Both Spotify and Tidal provide artists with breakdowns of how their music is performing and how much they're earning.

The Argument: UMG claims that TikTok's low payouts disproportionately affect smaller artists who rely heavily on streaming income. They argue that since TikTok significantly benefits from featuring music on its platform, fairer compensation should be provided to the artists who create it.

The Nuances: It's important to note that TikTok primarily functions as a short-form video platform, with music playing a supporting role. Unlike Spotify or Tidal, whose core function is music streaming, direct comparisons between their payout structures might be oversimplified.

The Current Situation: Negotiations are ongoing between UMG and TikTok. While no concrete agreements have been reached, the spotlight is now on how much value short-form video platforms contribute to the music industry and how artists should be compensated accordingly.
